So I need to be upfront with you guys.
I don’t like this bread.
I make faces when I eat it.
Even when dipped in a delicious, homemade white chili, it was not something I could eat more than half a slice of.
But it actually is quite good, I promise… as long as you like beer.
I’m sorry, It’s true. I’m that girl, the one who doesn’t like beer.
To be fair, I’m not into girly mixed drinks either. Or expensive wine. Or classy martinis.
I met an irish coffee milkshake I liked once, but to be honest, it was like 5% whiskey and 95% coffee ice cream and chocolate syrup.
Yeah, I’m the party pooper at the back of the bar drinking a virgin rum and coke. I’ve just never been able to accustom myself to the taste of alcohol. My friends have tried, believe me, to find something I like, but to this day, alcohol just tastes extremely odd to me.
Aside from missing out on a whole other level of culinary and social experiences, it’s not too bad sometimes. My drinks are always cheaper. I’ve never been drunk, let alone messy “what exactly did I do last night?” drunk. But there are times where it’s clear I’m missing out. Like when a friend describes how perfectly their red wine selection compliments the deep flavours of their steak. Their red wine always tastes like sour wood to me. It makes me feel as though I could never be a true “foodie”.
So I don’t like this bread. Which is sad, because Trevor tells me it’s pretty good.
It’s funny, if you ask him why he likes it, he says “It tastes like beer!”
If you ask me why I don’t like it, I say “It tastes like beer.”
Sorry, food world, I guess I’m just a little broken.
Cheddar Beer Bread
Recipe from Alton Brown
Ingredients
- Nonstick spray
- 8 ounces all-purpose flour
- 4 ounces whole-wheat flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon chopped fresh dill
- 4 1/2 ounces sharp cheddar, grated
- 12 ounces cold beer, ale or stout (I used Guinness)
- 1 to 2 tablespoons sunflower seeds, optional
Directions
- Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Coat the inside of a 9 by 5-inch loaf pan with the nonstick spray and set aside.
- Whisk together the all-purpose flour, wheat flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and dill in a large mixing bowl. Add in the cheese and stir in the beer just to combine. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan. Sprinkle with the sunflower seeds, if using.
- Bake on the middle rack of the oven until the bread reaches an internal temperature of 210 degrees F on an instant-read thermometer, about 45 to 55 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Transfer the loaf to a cooling rack for 10 to 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
Haha I’m completely with you on this one, I will never understand what all of the fuss is over beer. I think it’s just nasty tasting. My boyfriend always tells me it’s acquired, but I’ll pass on having to drink it over and over again to like it :)
Amanda,
You and I could be the only people in the world who don’t like beer and wine! I am with you, sister! They do taste bad, and I have never been drunk, either. It took until I was in my 40s to finally find a drink (not that I was really looking) that I liked. I had friends helping me along this path. Yes, the fruity drinks it is! I can relate to not liking beer bread, when all my friends just love the stuff. I share your feelings, a bit, about not feeling like a true “foodie.” However, your blog tells me diferrently. You are a true foodie. Your pictures and descriptions do not lie! People make too much fuss over alcohol. Food can stand alone!
I totally agree with the beer, wine, alcohol thing. Although, I find that a real dark beer, like Guinness, or some the local brewery kind, with hints of coffee and chocolate are winners – I don’t feel its ever necessary to drink something that can make your dining experience wonky. At some point, i just started telling people i’m a recovering alcoholic so they could stop pestering me to have a drink.
I found this recipe on tastespotting and I can’t wait to try it, I’m sure it’s true delight (plus I love beer and cheddar toegther :D)
Jess – Yeah, I take a sip of my husband’s beer every time he has one around me and I make the same face every time!
Kris – Thanks so much! Your words are too kind! :)
june – I can honestly say I’ve never used that tactic. All my friends know I don’t like alcohol, so they mostly leave me alone, but some I know will always try!
Valeria – I hope it works out for you! Sounds like it should if you love beer and cheddar together! :)
I have the same alcohol syndrome. The taste just never took. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t feel they needed to push thru that. So glad not to be alone.
I’m also glad not to be alone! I just keep telling myself, why push yourself to like something that will make your beverages cost more money? :)
Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets
I could add to my blog that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates.
I’ve been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with something like this. Please let me know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and I look forward to your new updates.
