La Bete Noire

So I knew, after a salad, I’d need something particularly decadent for you guys.

I found something called La Bete Noire.

That’s “The Black Beast” in french.

Its name is well deserved.

It’s sort of a… no holds barred, chocolate punch to the face. It’s the fartheset thing I could find from a salad.

Warm Spinach Salad with Smokey Pecans and Sweet Potato

So I know you folks typically come here for the guilty foods. The gooey, the rich and the unabashedly fattening. And today I give you.. a salad?

What madness is this?

Well, there are a few reasons.

  1. After all that talk about pretending food is healthier than it is, I felt it might be time to do something actually healthy, no excuses required.
  2. Yesterday, I’d eaten what I think was one of the greasiest meals I’ve ever had at an Irish Pub for lunch earlier that day. It wasn’t even deliciously greasy, it was “I got deep-fried in old, not hot enough oil” greasy. So this salad for dinner was like the carrot in a day of chocolate ice cream, allowing me to pretend yet again that I was healthier than I actually am.
  3. Whether or not you want to believe me, this salad is pretty awesome, and not just for a salad.

Let me break down the awesomeness for you.

Mug Brownie

You ever feel so mentally exhausted that you feel like giggling like a school girl and crying all at the same time?

I’ve been having a rough week.

Work’s gone a little crazy. I may had some 16 hour work days. One of them was on a Sunday.

I ate an entire bag of Milano Melts.

So what do you do when you run out of cookies and need more chocolate? Bake? That would be my standard answer, but what about when you have no time or energy?

You make a mug brownie.

Little Oreo Cheesecakes

So remember the Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies? They were decadent, delicious and a little bit ridiculous.

This treat isn’t quite as ridiculous, it’s no “turducken” of the baked good world, but there is an entire Oreo in each cheesecake. Plus a bit more broken up in the batter.

Why have an Oreo crumb crust when you can just have an Oreo as your crust?

Hazelnut Blondies

Nutella is my nostalgia food. It’s elementary school lunch hours and afternoon snacks while watching cartoons. It’s one of those flavours that brings me back to my mom’s livingroom, sitting cross legged on the carpet with an extra special snack in front of me on the coffee table.

With my brother’s peanut allergy, Nutella was our peanut butter in the house. It was a quick fix sandwich and an easy way for my mom to get protein in me. To me, it tasted like chocolate. Chocolate for lunch. It made me feel like I was getting away with murder.

We later found out from the allergist that Justin was actually allergic to hazelnuts as well, and it wasn’t much safer for us to keep in the house than peanut butter.

Funny how those things go.
