Twix Brownies

Guys guys guuuuuuuys!

I figured out what to do with all of that leftover funsize Halloween candy!!

Other than, of course, sitting on the couch with it, most of it shamelessly on your face, while you wonder to yourself how Jeff Winger could be such an implorable douche and so very adorable at the same time. (The answer may lie within Joel McHale’s abs…)

Tangent! Anyway, you take that candy, and you bake it into the middle of a brownie.

Because why not?

I had bags of Twix leftover so I put just Twix in these, but I think you could do interesting things with multiple types of chocolate bars, make a sort of “surprise” brownie. Assuming there’s no potential allergies to trigger.

There’s something altogether satisfying, tragic and shameful about a pile of empty candy wrappers, especially ones that emptied in the span of 15 minutes. Luckily they all went into the brownies instead of my face… this time.

Oh my. Look at what I did there. Isn’t it really something… heartwarming?

I added more on top but I’m not sure they were needed. I thought it’d be a nice little “HEY! Look at what I’ve got in here!” clue, but cutting into the brownies did enough to reveal the crazy Twix filling within. But then again, more Twix certainly wasn’t a bad thing.

I like how they sunk in just enough in the brownie to be embedded, but not so much that they actually sank in. That was my biggest concern overall, that the Twix “filling” would just turn out to be a Twix crust, with a huge mess of Twix that had sunk to the bottom of the pan.

I needn’t have worried. It was a gooey, crunchy, altogether fabulous filling.

One last thing… I have a confession.

I live in a condo where it’s impossible to get in without a key or someone physically walking to a door from the inside and letting you in. Also, there is only one family in my building with any progeny that could be considered “children”.

And yet… I still bought two bags of fun size Twix for Halloween.

Did I mention at any point that Twix is my favourite chocolate bar?

(Cool. Cool cool cool. #sixseasonsandamovie)

Twix Brownies

Brownie base recipe from Baked Explorations: American Desserts Reinvented

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon dark cocoa powder
  • 11 oz. quality dark chocolate (60-72%), coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 5 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 regular sized bags of fun-size Twix bars (I believe it was the 11.5 oz. bag)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Butter the sides and bottom of a glass or light-colored metal 9×13-inch pan. Line the bottom with a sheet of parchment paper, and butter the parchment.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt and cocoa powder.
  4. Place the chocolate and butter in the bowl of a double boiler set over a pan of simmering water, and stir occasionally until the chocolate and butter are completely melted and combined. Turn off the heat, but keep the bowl over the water of the double boiler, and add both sugars. Whisk until completely combined and remove the bowl from the pan. The mixture should be at room temperature.
  5. Add three eggs to the chocolate mixture and whisk until just combined. Add the remaining eggs and whisk until just combined. Add the vanilla and stir until combined. Do not over-beat the batter at this stage, or your brownies will be cakey.
  6. Sprinkle the flour mixture over the chocolate. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until there is just a trace amount of the flour mixture still visible.
  7. Brownie Assembly: Pour half of the brownie mixture into the pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Lay the Twix bars over the brownie batter, leaving a small gap of space around each bar (approx. a quarter inch). Pour remaining brownie batter over the Twix bars and carefully spread it even, taking care to not shift the Twix bars around.
  8. Bake the brownies for 30-35 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through the baking time, and check to make sure the brownies are completely done by sticking a toothpick into the center of the pan. The brownies are done when the toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  9. Remove the brownies from the oven and cool completely before cutting.
