Fondant, Nutella & Transformers

See the lady to my right/on the left side of the picture? That’s Tanya.

She’s one of those girls that you want to hate because she’s way classier/prettier/more put together than you, but you just can’t because she’s so darned sweet.

Seriously though, her classiness intimidates me.

While I barely know what I’m doing in photography (hellooo straight up copying the setups of my favourite food bloggers without understanding it!) Tanya’s camera is epic and her post-processing skills make my head spin. Her flickr makes my photos look like Sears Family Portrait Studio. She took and edited all the photos in this post! There’s a photo of fondant gears below that I can’t stop staring at. For serious.

Oh, also, in her spare time she’s a ballerina.

While she’s perfecting her pas de basque, I’m looking up ballet terms like “pas de basque” to include in a blog post.

But with the being sweet, when she asks where to find a great bakery that sells specialty cakes for her boyfriend, Gerry, and his 30th birthday, you come up with a crazy idea.

Nutella Filled Hazelnut Cookies

I recently discussed how I’m comfortable enough with my baking skills to make substitutions in recipes in a somewhat ‘willy nilly’ fashion, changing aspects of a recipe the very first time I encounter it. Even with this level of confidence in the kitchen, there is still something that… frightens me.


I don’t mean like.. replacing walnuts with pecans. I mean having an idea for something delicious pop into your head with no real recipe and saying..

Yes. I will make that.

This is a whole other level that I do not generally have the confidence for. But I had an idea and it involved nutella. So I had to make it.

Nutella Crack Pie

I’m addicted.

Not to crack. There’s no crack in this pie. “Crack” is being used in a hyperbolic sense in the title to allude to the degree of addictiveness this pie will impart on your mind and soul. (I always feel more eloquent than I actually am when I use words like ‘hyperbolic’)

But as far as I’m concerned, they could have called it “Nutella Pie” and it would have the same effect on me.

I’m addicted to nutella. (I can’t stop baking with it.)

and terrible romantic comedies. (No Strings Attached is a poor man’s Friends With Benefits. I knew this going in and I watched it last night anyway.)

It’s not you, it’s me… no, wait, that came out all wrong. It makes it sound like I’m breaking up with you folks, which I certainly do not want to do. I meant it’s my fault this blog has been so dead and nothing to do with any of you lovely folks. It’s more like we went on a break as opposed to a “break-up” but you probably thought it was just a fight but then I slept with the copy-girl and it got all confusing and… I didn’t mean to sleep with her, I meant to come straight back to you because I love you so, but once the betrayal was there, the longer I stayed away and the harder it was for me to admit my mistakes and….


I’m sorry, this analogy is rapidly spiraling out of control (and even more confusing for those not familiar with a key plot line from Friends that I randomly chose to reference) and I need to start from the beginning.

Hazelnut Blondies

Nutella is my nostalgia food. It’s elementary school lunch hours and afternoon snacks while watching cartoons. It’s one of those flavours that brings me back to my mom’s livingroom, sitting cross legged on the carpet with an extra special snack in front of me on the coffee table.

With my brother’s peanut allergy, Nutella was our peanut butter in the house. It was a quick fix sandwich and an easy way for my mom to get protein in me. To me, it tasted like chocolate. Chocolate for lunch. It made me feel like I was getting away with murder.

We later found out from the allergist that Justin was actually allergic to hazelnuts as well, and it wasn’t much safer for us to keep in the house than peanut butter.

Funny how those things go.

So when I said that my butterscotch craving had been satiated, I was lying.

I thought about keeping up the ruse… for the sake of baked good variety on the blog, moving on to another ingredient… but I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t lie to you, not this early in the relationship. You and me, we’ve been doing this together for what… 2.5 months? If I bring lies into our beautiful honeymoon period, what does that say for the long-term?

Tsk tsk, no, that will not stand.

However, the kitchen was in a bit of a… disarray from my previous endeavour with butterscotch.


I was going to clean it up, but if I did, I wasn’t in the mood to just make it all dirty again. And it was also such a hot day that the thought of turning on the oven was unfathomable.

So so very hot.

It was time for some scotcheroos.
